As a life-long thoroughbred owner and breeder, Mr. Hettinger had long been a leading force in the on-going battle to end horse slaughter in the United States. Located on 1000 acres of pristine land in Pawling, NY, Akindale was founded by John Hettinger, a respected businessman and philanthropist. Many other horses have been shipped to Akindale from national organizations such as TRF and Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue because ATBR provides safe haven for horses that can no longer race, are still in their prime, and are ready for new careers or to be companion animals. Since its inception in April 2006, Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue (ATBR) has rescued more than 100 horses directly from auction houses such as New Holland, PA, where they are destined for slaughter. If you are looking for an equine companion, please consider adoption from one of these organizations. Many lovely horses and ponies are waiting for good homes. However you choose to help, you will be rewarded by knowing that you’ve helped improve the quality of life for some very deserving equines. Or maybe you have some stable and horse supplies lying around that could be put to use by one of these farms. If you have any spare time – even an hour a week or an hour a month – you can help care for some of these rescued horses. They need volunteers and they need supplies.
